At Michael J. Rhoades – Addiction Specialist, we are an addictions recovery counseling center based out of Ashland, Oregon, Jackson County that serves both addicts and their loved ones. We offer treatment for drug/alcohol addictions as well as treatment for behavioral addictions such as pornography/sex addiction, gambling, food addictions and more.
Together we try to find the root causes of your addiction, to better formulate a permanent solution.
Addiction is a chronic brain disease. That’s why we treat it with the importance and expertise it demands.
We focus on each person individually and look at their life as a whole to determine the best recovery strategy.
Our ultimate mission is to educate and empower my clients with the skills and tools they need to cope, heal, and thrive.
All forms of substance abuse, whether the addiction is to alcohol, drugs, or both, take a significant toll on all aspects of a person’s life. At Michael J. Rhoades Addiction Specialist, our addiction treatment encompasses work with adults, teens, and their families to heal their minds, bodies, and spirits. Combining medicinal treatment, individual therapy sessions, family counseling, grief and loss recovery and interventions, as well as a caring, motivating environment, encourages commitment and yields the highest rate of success for long lasting sobriety.
Also, as of 2023, I have now become an Oregon Licensed Psilocybin Facilitator. I offer Psilocybin Experiencing and Micro Dosing. Research has shown and I have personally seen, treatment resistant addiction conditions respond rapidly to psilocybin treatment, often in just one session!
We provide individual psychotherapy that borrows from counseling orientations such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), motivational interviewing (MI), and interpersonal process therapy (IPT) along with others. Topics to be discussed are coping skills, developing supportive networks, relapse triggers, mental therapy, spirituality, and psycho-education.
Addiction has been classified as a “family disease.” We offer family addictions coaching to family members, spouses and/or friends of the loved one who is wrestling with addiction. Often times, family members and those closest to an addicted love one do not possess the knowledge base, boundaries, and support to assist their loved ones on a path to recovery. This often leads to burn-out, exhaustion, indefinite frustration, and hopelessness.
Interventions are a coordinated effort between an addictions professional and family to create a firm line with an addicted loved one and get them into necessary treatment. I will meet with the family or friends to educate, discuss, plan, and execute intervention that will link the loved one with treatment, while family members hold their bottom lines to prevent any enabling behaviors.
Knowing that every grief journey is different, Michael J. Rhoades holds space for parents and other caregivers who have lost children of any age to substance use. This is also available for spouses, partners, family members and friends. Join our network of survivors who have also lost loved ones to substance use. I offer grief resources, education, support and hope for healing.
As a Psilocybin facilitator with over 50 years of working with various altered states, I have seen how a single dose of psilocybin can lead to a “rapid, robust, and sustained reduction” in symptoms of severe depression when taken in conjunction with psychotherapy. Psilocybin, which the intestines convert into psilocin, a chemical with psychoactive properties, is also showing amazing promise in combating cluster headaches, anxiety, anorexia, obsessive-compulsive disorder and various forms of substance abuse.
Mental Health Evaluations are extremely useful in figuring out the reasons a person thinks, acts, feels, and remembers in the ways that they do. They can also determine whether an individual may have a co occurring disorder such as depression and a substance use disorder. Furthermore, a Mental Health Evaluation is useful in figuring out whether the mental issue is stemming from some sort of physical problem such as a traumatic brain injury or a thyroid issue.
Over the 50 years of experience in working with recovery through collective experience and education, I have refined my approach to addictions treatment that produces longstanding freedom from addictive and compulsive disorders. As a Certified Drug & Alcohol Counselor, MS, LPF, CADCIII, BHCC, NCC, I use my knowledge, compassion and experience to tailor specific solutions for each individual.

I wholeheartedly recommend Michael to anyone seeking help. His caring and committed nature, along with his knowledge of the brain, make it a place of true healing and transformation.
I had been dealing with anxiety and panic attacks for years and was convinced I would never be able to overcome them. But as I continue to work with Michael, a major burden has been lifted from me. He has been incredibly supportive and helped me to identify my triggers and develop coping mechanisms. Thanks to his guidance and expertise, I now feel much more in control of my day to day 😊
I've been seeing Michael for a few months now to help me work through my childhood trauma and grief. His compassionate and understanding has created a safe and supportive space for me to explore my emotions and memories. Thanks to him, I've been able to process some of the most difficult parts of my past and move forward with a greater sense of peace and clarity
Kicking a drug or alcohol addiction is difficult. Even after detox, people who are addicted to substances may continue to have cravings that make them very vulnerable to relapse. As Certified Counselors, we help those recovering from an addiction learn how to live happy, productive, and substance-free lives.
There are both biological and social factors that make some people more likely to abuse substances. Counseling sessions with a qualified, licensed counselor will help patients with the many factors, which often include:
Talking with someone during a stressful, sad, or difficult time can be an effective coping mechanism, and accredited substance abuse counselors can serve this purpose.
A 2017 Johns Hopkins University pilot study, co-authored by Albert Garcia-Romeu, found that the majority of 15 participants were able to quit smoking for at least 16 months after receiving two to three moderate to high-level doses of psilocybin. A similar proof-of-concept study into alcohol use disorder in 2015, led by Michael Bogenschutz, a professor of psychiatry at New York University Grossman School of Medicine, found that abstinence among addicts increased significantly following the use of psilocybin. Observational studies, including Jones’ report and additional research from Garcia-Romeu, have also found that psilocybin is associated with a reduced risk of using substances like cocaine, marijuana, and opioids.
Both perform almost the same types of tasks, but a drug counselor works strictly with patients suffering from drug abuse problems. A substance abuse counselor handles issues involving all forms of addiction problems, including eating disorders or gambling.
In a counseling session, you will typically talk with a mental health professional about your concerns, challenges, and short & long-term goals for yourself. I may provide guidance, support, and or feedback, as well as suggesting coping strategies or other techniques to help you improve your mental health and well-being.
The length of counseling varies depending on the individual and the nature of the concerns being addressed. Some people may only need a few sessions to work through a particular issue, while others may benefit from ongoing counseling over a longer period of time. Either way, we work together along with family or friends, if needed.
Yes, counseling sessions are typically confidential, meaning that what you discuss with your specialist will not be shared with others without your permission, except in cases where there is a legal or ethical obligation to do so (such as if our health professional believes that you or someone else is at risk of harm).
Each patient is struggling with addiction in different ways; therefore, substance abuse counselors don't use the same treatment plan and strategy with every client. We customize a treatment plan for each client according to their different cases and triggers. What works for you, may not work someone else and vice-versa.
The main difference is psychiatrists are medical doctors that can prescribe medications. In the United States, psychologists can only prescribe a limited number of medications, and only if they have training in psychopharmacology. And while psychiatrists have medical degrees, psychologists typically have doctorates and experiences in a non-medical field of study.
